Research Abstract |
Main works in the form of "pamphlet" and various kinds of historical records were collected, during the field survey over two years. The records include published diaries, collected letters and accounts of travels, that explain the social environment and the situation of the literaiy world in those days. Via the analysis of these records, first, the social and cultural background is made clear, which brought about the formation and circulation of the "pamphlets" under the rule of Joseph II. For the first half of the research period, we successfully approached to the daily side of the city life in the enlightening period. As for those, for example, way of association of intellectuals in Vienna, including also the writers and publishers, network of their social intercourse and the Freemason Lodges. Secondly, by analysing the individual "pamphlets", that their social repercussions and the political altitude of writers have to be related to, it is demonstrated that printed matters of this kind, until quite recently, considered as "The propaganda of enlightenment despotic political reform" have converted into the critical documents to the enlightening despotic principle itself. This transformation in the quality of such publications reflects the fact that the way of accepting enlightenment principle has changed in the city society of Vienna. This means simultaneously the transfiguration of social and political position of the intellectuals as readers, who supported the publication boom of that time. After this, on the basis of this research results, we would like to elucidate the spiritual characteristic of Vienna in eighteen cntury, continuing to utilise "the pamphlets" as important historical records, and widen the vision of research range, passing the French Revolution, Napoleon War from the enlightening period to Biedermaier, to construct the theoretical framework to the Vienna social cultural history.
