Research Abstract |
HIROHIDE NAKAMURA DESCRIBED HIS REACTION TO MICHAEL RADFORD'D THE MERCHANT OF VENICE AS AN EXAMPLE OF JAPANESE PERCEPTION TOWARD A SHAKESPEARE'S FILM. THIS FILM HAS PROVED TO ENCOURAGE THE PEOPLE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY NOT ONLY TO QUESTION THE MEANING OF THE OPPRESSION OF THE JEWS WHO SUFFERED FROM THE HOLOCAUST BUT ALSO TO REFLECT UPON THE RECURRING TRAGIC ACTS OF TERRORISM WHICH HAS BEEN DONE ON THE NAME OF CRUSADE. FOR THE JAPANESE THE MERCHANT OF VENICE HAS BEEN A POPULAR PLAY SINCE THE MEIJI ERA, AND PRODUCER, KEITA ASARI, DIRECTED THIS PLAY AS A TRAGEDY OF SHYLOCK AS EARLY AS IN 1968. AT THAT TIME HE SAID THAT HE COULD NOT THINK SHYLOCK IS A BAD MAN. DIRECTOR MICHAEL RADFORD REPRENTED SHYLOCK AS A TRAGIC FIRUREIN HIS FILM, AND WARNS US ABOUT THE DARK FUTURE RESULTINIG FROM THE ALKAIDA'S TERRORISM. NAKAMURA ALSO DESCRIBE HIS RESPONSE TO ZEFIRELLI'S THE TAMING OF THE SHREW(1967) IN DETAI. AS A RESULT HE FOUND THAT THE POVERTY OF PETRUCHIO HAS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT INFLUENCE UPON THE AUDIENCE THAN THE USUAL CRITICAL RESPONSE TO THE PLAY. HE ALSO DESCRIBED HIS PERCEPTION OF OTHELLO IN DETAIL FOR THE FUTURE INVESTIGATION OF OTHELLO'S FILM. MICHAEL GORMAN REFLECTS UPON HIS EXPERIENCE OF SHAKESPEARE IN THE AMERICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM, AND EMPHASIZES THE POWER OF REAL THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE OF HAMLET. THEN HE COMPARES THREE HAMLET'S FILM ADAPTATIONS AND DESCRIBED THEIR CHARACTERISTIC FEATURE.
