he consideration into the meaning of Homer and his epic present in the sonnet by Ugo Foscolo and some demotic poems by Solomos, which made an important development to the modem Greek poetry; and the comparative survey of Canzoniere 126 by Petrarca and the modern Greek translation by Solomos. Furthermore, a tentative examination into the idea of Greek tradition was made in the basis of two respects: the scrutiny of the manuscript variant readings and the Aldine edition of Aristophanes published in 1498; the presence of satiric spirit, as that in the old comedy, in the Greek shadow puppet theatre called Karagkiozi; and the message, concerning the social role of poetry, seen alive in the picture book of Aristophanes' Frogs. In the last chapter 'A Bridge between Two Distant Cultures', a few discussions were made with regard to the strange transformation of cultural differences in the process of translation of modem Greek experimental poems into Japanese and to the enduring values of lyric poetry through the translation of classical and modem Japanese poems into Greek.
