Research Abstract

The properties of mixing for liquid mixtures with closed consolute curves _ glycerol-guaiacol system and water-β picoline system _ are examined by light scattering experiment, neutron diffraction and mass spectroscopy.
The data of light scattering experiment show that the entropies of mixing ΔS of the systems are same as the entropy of mixing for an ideal mixing solution in the temperature region higher than the upper critical temperatures. But in the temperature region lower than the lower critical temperatures the entropies of mixing ΔS are nearly 1/10 of the ideal mixing solution's one. This shows the cluster formation in the temperature region lower than the lower critical temperatures. The data of neutron diffraction for glycerol-guaiacol system support this tendency. The direct measurement of the cluster sizes by the mass spectro-analyzer for water-β picoline system shows that there is a little, but interesting difference between water and heavy water for the cluster formation ability. We are now analyzing the obtained data, and also trying the computer simulations.
