Research Abstract

The purpose is the study is to make clear the bryophyte flora in alpine regions of East Asia and to analyze the speciation of bryophytes occurring in the regions.
1.Field research
Field researches were carried out in the following places and years : Mt.Sobo, Yaku Island, Mt.Tsurugi (2001) ; Mt.Haku, Mt.Airo, China (2002) ; Hokkaido, Mts.Yatsu (2003) ; Hokkaido, east part of Taiwan (2004).
2.Results
(1)Bryophyte flora of alpine regions
Among the bryophyte collections from East Himalayas and Yunnan, China, hypnaceous mosses were reported with several new regional records. The mosses of Pakistan are enumerated by the literature published up to 2001. The floristic relationships of mosses between Pakistan and the neighboring areas are discussed. Takakia lepidozioides, distributing mainly in alpine regions of East Asia, and Oedipodium griffithianum are newly reported from Tochigi Prefecture and East part of Hokkaido respectively. The affinity of the moss floras between Japan and Taiwan is discuss … More ed. Monotypic genera, Neodolichomitra and Giraldiella, are groups differentiated in the alpine regions in East Asia. Although they had only been known from southwestern China and Taiwan, Neodolichomitra yunnanensis was found from the high mountainoxis area in central Honshu, Japan, recently. It shows a close affinity to the bryophyte flora of alpine regions in East Asia.
(2)Speciation of alpine bryophytes
A new species of Gollania was described from Yunnan, China. As a result more than half of the species of Gollania occurs in SW China, which shows that the area is the center of the speciation of the genus. The results of the molecular phylogenic studies indicates the following : (1)the family Plagiotheciaceae is composed of Plagiothecium and Herzogiella, (2)monotypic genus Giraldiella is placed in the family Hypnaceae and is closely related to Pylaisia falcata and (3)monotypic genus Neodolichomitra is placed in the family Hylocomiaceae. Takakia lepidozioides is newly found in. Taiwan. As the result of the analysis of nucleotide sequences of the chloroplast gene, rbcL, there is no differences among the populations of Japan, Taiwan and Borneo. A gene which has been lost from the chloroplast genome in other mosses was present in T.lepidozioides. This suggests that this gene was lost from the chloroplast genome during the evolutionary history of mosses and the basal moss, Takakia, is uniquely present in alpine regions of East Asia. Less
