Research Abstract

The results are summarized as follows :
(1) The critical Taylor number based on the pad clearance has almost the same tendency which has been obtained in submerged multi-pad journal bearings.
(2) As the cavity arc extent θ_s increases, the Taylor vortices based on the pad clearance appear first. As θ_s increases further, the Taylor vortices based on the cavity clearance appear and coexist with those based on the pad clearance.
(3) Even if the cavity arc extent θ_s increases extremely large to minimize the bearing pad, the Taylor vortices based on the pad clearance never vanish. As the Taylor number increases, they penetrate the cavity region deeper and deeper to sweep the Taylor vortices based on the cavity clearance.
(4) When three minimized pads are set at intervals of 120 deg., the Taylor vortices based on the pad clearance sweep them away completely, as if the cavities do not exist.
Even in such a case, the cavity flow is naturally generated to satisfy the mass content role. Interaction between the Taylor vortices and cavity flows remains to be observed precisely in the future work.
