Research Abstract |
The objective of this study is not only to visualize permeability in the mixed soil but also to evaluate this behavior quantitatively using X-ray CT scanner. The soil used in this study was so called "light weight soil with air foam". Here, in order to obtain the well quantified results, a new testing apparatus for permeability test was developed, in which this apparatus is especially for the purpose of the use in the X-ray CT system. The proper image processing analysis was used in order to make quantitative discussion possible. Following is the list of the results from this study: 1) In order to make sure capability of X-ray CT scanner in this study, the simple permeable behavior was visualized using X-ray CT scanner as a previous study. 2) A new type of permeability testing apparatus especially for X-ray CT system was developed and a series of permeability test was conducted with different confining conditions (100 and 300kPa) in the mixed soil which is called light weight soil with air foam. 3) In order to make successful quantitative discussion, a method of proper image processing analysis was developed and using this technique, the permeable behavior was discussed not only visually but also quantitatively. 4) In addition to those results, the application of this technique to geo-environmental engineering is also expected and here, the diffusion on the contaminant water in the saturated soil was tried to visualize using this testing apparatus with X-ray CT scanner. 5) Finally, the effectiveness of industrial X-ray CT scanner in geotechnical engineering was confirmed based on these results in this study.
