Research Abstract

We found that a fission occurs as a solitary wave progresses under an elastic floating plate and that the mechanism of this fission is different from that of a soliton fission because the fission under an elastic floating plate occurs in front of the solitary wave while a soliton fissions occurs behind the solitary wave.
The fission becomes more clearly as it progresses under the plate so that it is difficult to investigate the mechanism of the fission experimentally because the length of the wave flume is not enough long. So, we developed a numerical simulation method which consists of a finite element method for calculation of deformation of elastic plate and a boundary element method for calculation of water wave. This method can simulate the interaction of elastic plate and waves by implicit calculation to make the values of displacement and pressure calculated from the finite element method and from the boundary element method respectively agree with each other on the interface of water and plate. This is the first numerical method as a time domain analysis of the interaction between water waves and the elastic floating body.
While our experiments showed that this fission occurs only in front of the solitary wave, the numerical simulations show that there are three kinds of fission under an elastic floating plate ; fission in front of the solitary wave, fission behind the solitary waves, and fissions on both side of the solitary wave. And also, we found that the occurrence of each type fission depends on the water depth and the rigidity of plate.
Experimental results showed that under the elastic plate the pressure propagates a little faster than the deformation of plats. The pressure distribution changes to compensate this discrepancy, and then the deformed pressure distribution causes fission.
