Research Abstract

The purpose of the current study was to develop a light source as well as a light-curing unit for polymerization of indirect composites.
1. A reflector was designed using a glass substructure instead of a metallic one. The inner surface of the reflector was coated with varying metal oxides. By changing the composition and thickness of the coating layers, degree of the reflection could be changed.
2. A metal halide light source was constructed after preparation of an arc tube and a reflector. A laboratory light-curing unit was next fabricated. The MIII unit was especially designed for laboratory polymerization of indirect veneering and inlay/onlay composites and opaque resins. The unit was equipped with two halogen lamps and a metal halide lamp.
3. Depth of cure of an indirect composite was determined to evaluate curing performance of the MIII unit. A xenon curing unit (UXS) was used as the reference unit. Depth of cure after specific light exposure period was as follows. Exposure period (s), MIII DC (mm): UXS DC (mm): 20 s=2.00:l.24. 30 s2.13:l.55. 60 s=2.50:l.95. 90 s=3.04:2.26.
4. Knoop hardness number of an indirect composite (Sinfony) was determined, and the results were KHN=24 for the Visio units, and KHN=40 for the MIII unit. Significant difference was found between the two values.
