Research Abstract

This article presents the functional and menial health status results of 152 permanent public apartment residents, who were relocated after the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake. Life-support advisers (L.S.A) were stationed at all the public apartments which we chose to research. 45 L.S.A were requested to choose those who would be most co-operative to assist in our research However, 7 L.S.A withdrew from our research because they couldn't handle dealing with those who were suffering from dementia The remaining 38 L.S.A explained to the elderly the method and purpose of our interview, to receive their approval. 18 nurses visited their homes to do the interviews, Initially 190 elderly were selected to be interviewed, but 38 withdrew, leaving only 152 to be interviewed.
Family background:75% of those lived alone and 19.7% with a spouse
Living situation:52% were living in refuge centers and 72% in temporary housing Frequency of those going outdoors:48% went; out everyday and 17% once a week, or less. Number of those who suffered from diseases: Half had more than one disease, while one person had 6.
Hospital admission: 24.3% were admitted to hospital during the year of research.
Social support: Emotional support; was provided by the L.S.A., the district, welfare commissioner and the resident's association, while informal support was provided by family members. Nursing care was also available to those who needed it.
Mental health results of the General Health Questionnaire (G.H.Q 28) showed that the average is 6.54 and standard deviation is 5.09. the cut-off point, was at. 6/7.
41.4% reached the cut-off point.. showing symptoms of both physical and mental illness
