Research Abstract |
Analyses of Listening Comprehension Mechanism based on Processing Units This study describes an investigation into cognitive processing in listening comprehension in L2, and more generally. Listeners were observed in an interactive listening comprehension setting, which supported cognitively active performance. Data collection was done by computer, using various types of input in varying presentation modes and with comprehension tasks requiring different kinds of inferencing, and different amounts of context provided. To sum up all the analyses, (1)there are four different sizes of processing unit, and the sizes of processing units relate to levels of information in listening comprehension. The processing consists of the following hierarchical and integrative cognitive activities : (2)linguistic processing based on‘clause' level (words, phrases and clauses) and‘sentence' level input information, (3)contextual inferencing for coherence - (3a)processing input for contextual information, (3b

)feedback inferencing, where intermediate interpretations are fed back to previous levels of processing, (3c)relevant inferencing in relation to listeners' current understanding at that point in the processing, (3d)processing with intentional selection in relation to what listeners have in their minds - and (4)knowledge based processing, where input information is integrally processed with reference to stored information. Listening comprehension processing is summarized in a MultiPath model. A Development of a Computer Assisted Foreign Language Listening Comprehension Practice System A CALL system is developed by HyperCard to provide cognitive interaction between listeners and multi-media text (speakers). The prototype model facilitates listening to and/or repeating of any parts of text by clicking pre-segmented play buttons. Advances in computer network technology (server-client model) enable us to construct interactive CALL on the network, where teaching resources (texts and interface programs) are stored in server and have to be independent to platform types of clients. We have now implemented the learners' interface by Java programming. Less
