Research Abstract |
The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness and feasibility of creating bibliographic data and metadata principally based on text-level bibliographic entity in bibliographic database construction. In modeling the current practice, bibliographic data and metadata are created in principle based on manifestation-level entity which indicates the physical embodiment of a work―an intellectual or artistic content itself. In this study, instead of manifestation-level entity, text-level entity was adopted as a primary one ; text can be defined as the intellectual or artistic realization of a work in the form of alpha-numeric, musical, or choreographic notation, sound, image, object, movement, etc. 1. Proposing a conceptual model giving primacy to text-level entity. A new model that gives primacy to text-level entity was proposed by using the E-R modeling language. The model consists of bibliographic and other entities including the text-level one, their attributes, and relationships between those entities. By applying the concept 'user tasks' to the new model, a scenario on how entities are used by users was outlined. 2. Making bibliographic data in line with the proposed model. (1) Possible ways of creating bibliographic records in accordance with the model were categorized, and one was selected as the most appropriate. (2) Conversion was tried from existing bibliographic records created in the current practice to new ones structured under the way selected. Difficulties were also identified in the process of algorithmic conversion by computer program. (3) A prototype system was developed to make full use of the records converted from existing ones.
