Research Abstract

Modern information systems can provide us with a lot of variable information simultaneously and in any format, i.e. by visual and auditory. If the systems present too much information at the same time or in an inappropriate combination of auditory and visual, users may fail to get the variable information. So it is very important to know the limitation of the auditory and visual information acquisition and the appropriate information formats. However it has not been experimentally analyzed yet. This study (i) defines the information format based on media and modality, (ii) designs the experiment to measure the multi-media and multi-modal cognitive characteristics, (iii) analyzes the results of experiment and (iv) points out the experimental problems for the future work. Firstly we have defined the information formats based on media and modality. "Media" means the modes of information presentation such as visual and auditory. "Modality" categorizes three information presentation formats … More , i.e. realistic presentation, linguistic presentation, and symbolic presentation. Secondly we design the experiment to know cognitive characteristics. Subjects are asked to perform main task and sub task. A main task is a pseudo car-driving in order to give the subjects the constant and continuous cognitive loads. A sub task is to respond to the information that subjects can recognize when information categorized by multiple different contents is presented. Subjects are asked to perform the main task by priority. Then, we conducted the preliminary experiment. Seven men and three women ranging in age from 22 to 31 years old participated in the experiment. We calculated the correct answer rate and the perceived information quantity. The results suggested the following cognitive characteristics ; a) Visual media was recognized easier than auditory media. b) Subjects recognized triple simultaneous presentations better than two. c) Triple linguistic presentation was difficult to recognize. d) Realistic presentation by visual media was recognized easier than symbolic and linguistic presentation. e) Linguistic presentation by auditory media was recognized easier than realistic and symbolic presentation.
