Research Abstract

Solar Power Satellite is a clean and inexhaustible energy source and one of promising methods to save the energy crisis. Microwave energy transmission is one of key technologies of the SPS. The retrodirective array is used in order to direct a power beam to a rectenna site (power receiving site). A pilot signal is sent from the receiving cite and we apply the spread spectrum (SS) modulation to this signal. This method is robust to noises, can differentiate the signal from interferences and cope with multiple pilot signals
A new microwave power transmission system using a SS pilot signal is developed for the SPS (Solar Power Satellite). The antennas and a frequency band are shared by both power transmitters and pilot signal receivers by band elimination filters and software synchronization detection. Fundamental characteristics of phase-difference detection between two channels of a pilot signal are evaluated. An experiment with an 8-element array antenna was performed and the direction of arrival was successfully detected under transmitting power from the same antennas. The SS pilot signal system was made for 2.45 GHz and applied to 5.8 GHz SPORTS (Space Power Radio Transmission System). Single- and multi-beam forming for uniformly excited antenna array is optimized using the genetic algorithm
