Research Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between Stages of Exercise Behavior Change (SEBC) and Self-efficacy. A questionnaire on exercise habit was mailed to a randam sample of 1,000 middle aged Japanese, of whom 100 people responded. The measure of exercise habits used were those delineated in SEBC (Marcus et al., 1992, 1993).
We found 34.0 percent exercise regularly in daily life(three or more times per week for 20minutes or longer), as described in "Action" " and "Maintenance" categories of SEBC. "Precontemplation" and "Contemplation" included samples who had not exercised at all, and their total was 61.0percent [study1]. In the follow-up survey, We found 39.0 percent exercise regularly in daily life as described in "Action" and "Maintenance" categories of SEBC. "Precontemplation" and "Contemplation" included samples who had not exercised at all, and their total was 55.Opercent [study2].
Significant differences in exercise self-efficacy scores were revealed between all five Categories of Exercise Behavior Change. Mean self-efficacy scores were lowest for subjects in Precontemplation and highest for those in Maintenance.
In the follow-up survey one year later, the subject for whom the SEBC went up was 28.0% of the whole and the SEBC that decreased was 12.0% of the whole. As for 60.0% of the whole, the SEBC did not change at all. The score of the self-efficacy exercise was as follows ; the rise group of a SEBC(4.4±6.2), the stagnation group of a SEBC(-0.6±4.8), and the downward group of SEBC(-4.9±6.1). These results suggested the score of self-efficacy also changed to plus with the rise of the SEBC. To adjust for multiple comparisons when ANOVA showed a significant difference between groups (p<.05) , Fisher LSD post-hoc test was used to identify which group differences accounted for the significant P value.
