Research Abstract |
Research on unique light sources named MIRRORCLE is progressed. We have completed two tabletop synchrotrons, MIRRORCLE-20 for coherent FIR production and MIRRORCLE-6X for hard X-ray production. Beam lines for FIR applications, magnified imaging, X-ray microscope, protein chrystallography, and soft X-ray production have been developed. MIRRORCLE produces radiation through a number of different mechanisms : photon storage ring FEL, bremsstrahlung, transition, and parametric radiations. Both synchrotrons are exact circular. The former uses exact circular optical cavity around the electron orbit to extract whole FIR synchrotron light. The later uses a micron order sized target in the electron orbit. Monochromatic X-rays in the 10-30keV ranges are produced when a crystal target is used. A thin film target (<1 μm) results in EUV-soft X-ray production. The measured bremsstrahlung radiation brightness is 10^<10> photons/s, mrad^2, and 0.1% band for 30keV at any spot within the cone of 85-mrad

half angle. The intensity of the diffraction spot from the crystal target is 10^<12> photons/s, mrad^2, and 0.1% bandwidth. The total soft X-ray power in the order of 8 mlliwatt is produce by the transition radiation. Using Bremsstrahlung radiation leads to extremely high-resolution imaging and projection images with more than 20 times magnification. The edge of the image is strongly enhanced by the refraction contrast. Parametric X-rays provide a monochromatic and focused beam that is most advantageous in the characterization of materials and surfaces. Soft X-rays produced via transition radiation are emitted into a sharply defined narrow cone of 1/γ±25mrad that matches well to the Wolter or Schwarzschild type X-ray focusing mirror. Dedicated machine MIRRORCLE-20SX under construction, which produces one watt radiation, is useful for EUV lithography. MIRRORCLE-CV1 and -CV4^* are under designing and have a 30cm synchrotron outer diameter, that is more like an X-ray tube, are recommended for non-destructive testing and medical diagnosis. Less
