Outline of Annual Research Achievements

恒星の内部自転は、磁場を生成させて多様な活動性を引き起こしたり、遠心力が内部構造に影響を与えることから、星の進化を考える上で重要な要素である。しかし、自転を考慮する際には2次元構造を解かねばならないこと、及び自転構造そのものがどうあるべきか、どう進化するものかが不明であるため、理論の空白に近い状態であった。
一方、観測的には、大質量星の最終形態である中性子星は、自転周期が約1秒のオーダーのものが多く、主系列段階の大質量星が角運動量を保ったまま中性子星になった場合より遥かに遅い。同様のことは、小質量星の最終形態である白色矮星についても言える。そこで、星は最終形態になる以前のどこかの段階で角運動量を放出するものと考えられる。
従来は、星が角運動量を損失するのは、大量の質量放出を起こす赤色巨星段階末期と思われてきたが、ケプラー宇宙望遠鏡を駆使した星震学的研究により、赤色巨星初期もしくは準巨星段階において、中心部と表層との自転周期の差は、予想よりかなり小さいことが分かり、準巨星段階よりもっと早い段階で、角運動量の再配分が起きていると結論されるようになった。よって、主系列段階で既に角運動量の再配分が起きていることになる。実際、太陽の輻射層では、ほぼ均一回転であることが日震学から分かっている。また、幾つかのA型主系列星もほぼ均一回転であることが最近の星震学から分かって来ている。
この研究では、22個の太陽型主系列星について、星震学から決めた内部自転と、分光学的に決めた表面の回転とを比較し、内部深くでの自転が表面の自転に比べてどれくらい速いかを検証した。結果は、内部深くでの自転は表面での自転のたかだか2倍速いにとどまり、均一回転に近いものが多数あることが分かった。
このことから、主系列星段階で既に、星内部で角運動量を均一化させる様に効率的に輸送されていることが結論される。
