Outline of Annual Research Achievements

酸化チタン系材料を中心に,太陽光を利用した燃料製造に関する結果を報告する。ここで述べる酸化チタン系材料は半導体光触媒および光電気化学とともに,環境改善やエネルギー変換応用において重要な役割を果たすことが知られている。酸化チタンは水溶液中での化学的安定性が高く,地球上に豊富に存在し,環境にもやさしい材料でありながら,高い光活性を示すことから,太陽光照射下において光駆動デバイスの電子受容体として潜在的な利用価値が高い。ホンダ-フジシマ効果に代表される酸化チタンによる水の光分解(PEC)は,太陽光駆動PECプロセスを実現するためのナノ構造光触媒材料の設計に大きく貢献してきた。また,酸化チタンの価電子帯に生成した正孔は,その強い酸化力によって汚染物質などの化学物質を酸化分解するのに有利に働き,実際の環境浄化技術に応用されてきた。しかし,酸化チタンは太陽光スペクトルの僅か5%以下の紫外線にしか反応しないためPEC効率は低い。酸化チタンは価電子帯の上端が約3.2Vと高く,そのため,CdS,CdSe,GaAsやGaPなどの可視光に応答する半導体材料では困難な水のPEC分解が可能である。PEC水分解を犠牲試薬など用いることなく達成するような,集光効率5%以上の酸化チタン系材料を開発することが強く求められている。以上の背景を基に,本研究では次のような方針によって酸化チタンナノ構造電極のPEC性能向上に努めた成果を収めた。a) 金属ナノ粒子を修飾した表面プラズモン効果やショットキーバリア形成,b) 半導体量子ドット光捕集材による可視光吸収の増加,c) レアアース元素のドーピングによって界面電荷分離の制御などである。
