Outline of Annual Research Achievements

液体／固体界面あるいは気体／液体界面の分析手法の確立は、圧力環境によって発現機能の異なる触媒等の評価、次世代電池における電解液／電極界面の分析、更には揮発性試料・含水状態である生きた生物試料の分析において極めて重要な課題である。これらの試料は真空中に導入すると物性や構造の変化等が起こり、測定すべき本来の状態を保持できない。このため、評価解析のための手法としては、大気圧あるいは低真空条件に適用可能な分析法が必須である。しかしながら、本来真空中で行われることを前提とした固体表面分析手法を大気圧に近い条件下に適用するに際しては、極めて短い平均自由行程に起因する、一次プローブの引き出しの困難さや、二次粒子の検出効率の低さが大きな問題であった。
本研究課題では、高いエネルギーに起因して大気圧下でも数mm程度の飛程をもつ高速重イオンビームを一次プローブとして用いることで、大気圧下での二次イオン質量分析を実現した。特に最終年度は、液体／固体界面に特有の情報を取得する方法論の確立に注力した。具体的には、安息香酸などの、水溶液中で固有の分子会合等を起こす有機分子の水溶液を試料とし、低真空中あるいは大気圧下での二次イオン質量分析を行った。時間の経過に伴い揮発していく安息香酸水溶液由来の二次イオン強度をモニタリングしていくことで、液体と固体の界面のみで検出される固有のピークを検出することに成功した。本手法の確立により、電池材料の電極／電解液界面における化学反応をリアルタイムに追跡可能となり、新規電極材料の開発などに貢献することが期待される。
