Outline of Annual Research Achievements

三次元トポロジカル絶縁体、ディラック/ワイル半金属を含む「ディラック電子系」における電子・スピン輸送特性に関する知見を深めた。特に電子輸送について、厳密な解析手法を提案してその有用性を実証し、最終的に報告されている当該物質群を包括する模型の構築に成功した。本物質群は電荷輸送における相対論効果をはじめとし、多彩な量子輸送現象の舞台として大きな注目を浴びている。しかし同時に、適切とは言い難い推論や過剰な主張が全体像を見えにくくしている印象を受ける。新しい手法では理論模型に依存しない特性値を明確にする。従って実験結果のみから模型の妥当性を判定できる利点を持つ。またこの手法は半世紀に渡り不可能と考えられていた限界について新しいパラダイムを与えるものであり、今後他方面への応用が期待される。本成果の一部は2015年6月にPhysical Review B誌にRegular Articleとして掲載された。その他、詳細や具体的な応用例に関する論文が数編、査読または執筆中である。
最後に本研究課題のまとめとして、電子状態とスピン流の関係について言及しておく。上記の物質群についてはじめに提案されたのは前者に関する「基底状態におけるスピン偏極」であり、これは分光的手法によって観測可能である。一方でスピン輸送は本質的に非平衡現象であり、観測手法が限られている。この「平衡」状態と「非平衡」状態の物理がしばしば混同されていることが、期待される機能性が得られない一因となっている可能性がある。各々の測定に関する物理を明確にし、それらの関係を注意深く検証することが今後の研究進展に必要と考えられる。
