Outline of Annual Research Achievements

当該年度における研究の成果の１つは、NASAゴダード宇宙飛行センターのX線偏光観測衛星ミッション、「PRAXyS」に搭載される、Time Projection Chamber(TPC)の技術を用いたガスX線偏光計の、検出器較正論文を主著者としてまとめ上げ、Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics(NIM)に投稿したことである。1兆ガウスという地上では作り出すことの難しい強磁場を持つ中性子星連星のＸ線偏光観測を実現可能にすることは、量子電磁気学(QED)の非線形効果の検証にとって有効である。この論文は、昨年度に米国ブルックヘブン国立研究所のシンクロトロン放射光施設において行った偏光感度の性能評価試験結果と、NASAゴダードで行われた、無偏光ソースを用いた系統誤差の評価試験で構成されている。今回の解析から、6.4 keV以上のエネルギー以上では、飛跡が長すぎて、従来の電子飛跡画像の再構成法では十分にブラッグピークの影響を除去できず、偏光感度が予想よりも下がってしまうことがわかった。そのため、我々は新たな方法として、離心率に加えて画像の３次モーメント(Skewness)を用いた新たなロジックを開発し、高エネルギー側で偏光感度が下がる事態を回避することに成功した。これらの結果を用いて、現在の偏光計の性能と、典型的なX線ミラーの性能を組み合わせて、中性子星連星を観測した際に、どの程度の偏光度まで、QEDの非線形効果による真空の複屈折現象を検証できるかを定量的に見積もり、自身がLOCの一人として開催した、「～中性子星の観測と理論～　研究活性化ワークショップ」等で発表を行った。また、これまでのすざく衛星による中性子星連星の観測結果などをまとめて、理研で行われた国際ワークショップ、「Comprehensive Studies of Neutron Stars」や、X線偏光計の軌道上での較正方法の打ち合わせをするために訪れたUniversity of Iowaでセミナーを行い、電波観測など、他波長の専門家らと議論を行った。
