Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本年度は化石シカ類の古生態学・古生物学的研究を中心に進めた。安定同位体分析を用いた、化石リュウキュウジカとリュウキュウムカシキョンの古生態復元論文については、昨年度中に国際誌に投稿したものが改訂を経て受理となり、出版された。
また共同研究者と化石シカ類の生活史復元を目指し、四肢骨の組織学的な分析に着手した。沖縄本島のハナンダガマ洞穴から産出した、リュウキュウジカとリュウキュウムカシキョンに加え、比較現生標本として、千葉県産のニホンジカ、キョン、屋久島産ニホンジカ（ヤクシカ）について、四肢骨の組織切片を作成し、光学顕微鏡ならびに偏光顕微鏡による検鏡を行った。
その結果、リュウキュウジカはニホンジカとは骨組織の構造が大きく異なり、爬虫類など成長の遅い動物の骨組織と共通する特徴を持っていた。リュウキュウムカシキョンについては標本の保存状態が悪かったが、リュウキュウジカと同様に成長の遅い骨組織を示していた。同様の骨組織学的な特徴は、極端な島嶼適応を示す、地中海バレーアレス諸島に生息していた絶滅種であるウシ科動物Myotragusで報告されており、本研究での報告が哺乳類では世界で2例目となる。
Myotragusもリュウキュウジカも、捕食者のいない島嶼環境で生活史戦略が変化し、それに伴い骨組織に示される成長様式も変化したものと推測される。具体的には、外的死亡率の低い環境で生活史戦略がr戦略型からK戦略型へと変化し、成長に時間がかかる反面、寿命が長かった。また一般に、K戦略型の動物は内的増加率が低い（＝増えにくい）ため、狩猟などの人為的な影響を受けると短期間で数が激減し、絶滅にいたる可能性がある。したがって、化石シカ類の更新世末における絶滅にも、その頃に渡来した先史時代人が関わっていた可能性が考えられる。
