| Research Abstract |
The purpose of our researches is to consider the interaction in Early Kofun Period between Japan Islands, Korean Peninsula and China, by the analysis of tumuli and their funerary objects. As a case study, we focused on the Shikinzan tumulus located in Ibaraki city, Osaka prefecture, which is a typical keyhole-shaped burial mound in Early Kofun Period.
In the field, we began by a survey on/around the tumulus, and then excavated the mound for revealing its scale and structure. The following three results are obtained. The first is that the length of the tumulus is about 110m. The second is that this keyhole-shaped burial mound consists of three tiers. The third is that the whole surface of the mound was once covered with stones, as a keyhole-shaped cairn. Important is our collecting from the mound a large number of fragments of cylindrical haniwa, by which we can date this tumulus to the middle phase of Early Kofun Period.
In the laboratory, we re-examined mortuary goods from the vertical chamber of the Shikinzan tumulus, all of which had been found in the previous 1947 excavation. Interdisciplinary researches were also carried out, including composition analyses for red pigments characterization and stone source identification. Of all these mortuary goods, in order to investigate the relationship between Japan Islands and the continent, we pursued detailed researches on iron arrowheads, an iron cuirass, an iron fork-shaped hoe, bronze mirrors, a cylindrical bronze object, steatite bracelets, and shell bracelets. We can be certain that these artifacts are considerably important to understand the feature of the interaction at that time.
