Research Abstract |
Cleft Lip and/or Palate (CL/P) is the most common congenital anomaly among Asian people including Japanese. Its incidence is one out of 500〜600. This anomaly is thought to be caused by multiple factors such as genetic or environmental factors. Nutritional deficiency needed for the early generation period is one of the causes. In this study, we analyzed a gene with environmental factor, C677T of enzyme MTHFR (methyltetrahydrofolate reductase) which is connected with metabolism of folic acid. We detected CC, CT, TT patterns from data of 170 Vietnamese CLP patients which we are collecting and preserving and also from 129 control data. Incidence of patterns among Vietnamese CL/P patients are CC:115(67.6%), CT:54(54.6%), TT:1(0.6%) and incidence among control are CC:84(65.1%), CT:42(32.6%), TT:3(2.3%). Rates of CT and TT were lower than those of Japanese or Italian. Comparing the incidence between Vietnamese patients and control group, there was no significant difference if "under 5%" is determined to have significant difference by x^2 test. However, as there have been some reports abroad about the relation between MTHFR C677T and this anomaly, further analysis is necessary by various methods. In this study, we analyzed patterns of parents from 169 families. As the number of hetero pattern parents for transmission disequilibroum test was few, we would like to increase the number. Furthermore, as many samples are necessary for analysis based on detailed classification such as cleft patterns or sex, we will continue to collect data.
