Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is to present a generic production process, aimed at developing an operable meta model that captures the typical manufacturing architectures in various fields of Japanese manufacturing industries. Such a model is needed when the future directions of Japanese manufacturing industries are aligned with the needs of Japanese manufacturing enterprises. In order to formulate some typical characteristics of Japanese production processes as a common knowledge property, the model should describe the entire scope of the production planning and scheduling functionalities and processes, as well as the interdependencies among them. We focused on the production planning and scheduling (PPS), which is one of the most important production management functions and activities, and understood the PPS as a core decision function in a production management process, standing at the cross point between the material flow from suppliers to customers and the information flow from pro

duct development to production monitoring. In this year, we mainly discussed a manufacturing architecture based on an Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) concept. ASP provides highly configurable optimization capabilities to enable the Agile and/or Lean Enterprise and supports organizations to simulate value stream planning alternatives based on business objectives, evaluate and solve constraint situations, and then execute an optimal solution. As a result, we constructed a conceptual framework of Japanese-oriented ASP and also presented the operable meta model that is suitable for describing typical production processes including a Just-In-Time (JIT) production system which is a well-known Japanese-originated one as a Toyota Production System (TPS). Many research outcomes from this study have been presented at different domestic and international conferences, and several research articles were published in some refereed journals. Future research addresses the application of the operable meta model we developed in the actual manufacturing environments. Less
