Research Abstract

MIXTURES OF HZr_2(PO_4)_3 WITH THE SOLUTION OF METALLIC ELEMENT ( Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd AND Pb) WERE TREATED AT 250°C 24 HOURS IN AN AUTOCLAVE, IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE IMMOBILIZATION OF HARMFUL METALLIC ELEMENTS. THE IMMOBILIZED RATE INCREASED WITH AN INCREASE OF IONIC RADIUS OF THE IMMOBILIZED METALLIC ELEMENT. THE HARMFUL METALLIC ELEMENT LEACHING RATES OF IMMOBILIZED PRODUCTS IN DEIONIZED WATER AND 1 mol-dm^<-3> -HC1 AT 160°C < 10^<-6> gm^<-2> d^<-1> AND < 10^<-4> gm^<-2> d^<-1>. FURTHERMORE, THE APPLICATION OF THE PRESENT METHOD WAS TRIED FOR THE IMMOBILIZATION OF Cs, Sr AND RARE-EARTH ELEMENTS WHICH ARE THE RADIOACTIVE WASTES AND ARE DIFFICULT TO IMMOBILIZE BY THE CONVENTIONAL TECHNIQUES, AND FOR THE IMMOBILIZATION OF OTHER ELEMENTS KNOWN AS THE SOURCES OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION. PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENTS REVEALED THAT THESE ELEMENTS WERE EFFICIENTLY IMMOBILIZED IN HZr_2(PO_4)_3.
