Research Abstract |
This research project has been carried out from 2002 to 2004 in collaboration with Dr John T.Carpenter (Lecturer in the History of Japanese Art, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London & Head of the London Office of the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures) and Dr Ellis Tinios (Honorary Lecturer, School of History, University of Leeds). We did research at nine museums in the UK, Switzerland, and the U.S. (and four museums in Japan) and exchanged knowledge about ukiyo-e and kabuki with curators there. Twelve sets (nineteen sheets) of surimono were purchased by this grant and are stored at the Atomi University Library. We had a colloquium on our project at the Sainsbury Institute in Norwich on 15 August, 2002. On 28 august 2003, Iwata made presentation on surimono at the 10th International Conference of EAJS (European Association for Japanese Studies) to explore the study on surimono. Articles on following subjects are included in our report. 1) the relationship between text and image 2) the collaborative process in kabuki culture contributed to by poets, fan club, and artists 3) various types of actor surimono A list of Kunisada surimono and poems from them are also appendixed. Utilizing the results of our report, we will publish our study in English after continuing our research at more museums, revising our articles, and adding more data.
