The purpose of this research is to perform scientific classification for the quality of the material and characteristics clearly for the old printed books, woodcut color print, archives from modern times.
This research did research on the technology which measures quality of paper with the measurement equipment (CCD expansion picture) which used the microscope. This investigation minimized the influence on historical heritage, and clarified the special feature of paper.
First, various kinds of scientific research was performed by using "Handmade Japanese paper" as a sample.
Investigation to old printed books, woodcut color print, archives was conducted from the following contents.
(1) In the case of old printed books, the quality of paper of the book published by Edo for every age was investigated.
(2) In the case of woodcut color print, it becomes many colors in 1765 (afterwards Meiwa year). Durable "Handmade Japanese paper" (housho) which used the kozo as the raw material. The quality of paper used for woodcut color print was investigated.
(3) In the case of archives, it is at a raw material, and a color, a use and a place of production, and names, such as paper(danshi and housho etc.) which used the kozo as the raw material, are attached.
Each quality of paper was analyzed. Results of an investigation were summarized in the report.
