Research Abstract |
In this research, I have aimed to elucidate functional and pragmatic principles governing inversion structures in discourse in the framework of Relevance Theory and Cognitive Grammar. I have also built a database of English inversion structures in discourse. Specific results of the researches are as follows : 1.After discussing inadequacies of previous literature on English cleft constructions, I have demonstrated that exhaustiveness implicatures observed in cleft constructions are not conventional implicatures but conversational implicatures. [Kato(2002), Kato(2003a), Kato(2004)] 2.I have clarified the functional properties of inversion constructions in discourse in the framework of Information Structure. [Kato(2004)] 3.I have proposed new teaching materials regarding inversion sentences, double object constructions, and preparatory it constructions in the framework of Relevance Theory. [Togashi and Kato(2003)] 4.I have constructed a database, which stores examples of inversion structures, cleft constructions, and data concerned with information structures and Relevance Theory.
