Research Abstract

An optimal design and environmental effects on vibration of steel structures reinforced by fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) sheets were studied. FRP sheets used in this study are pasted on a structure using epoxy resin, which hardens at normal temperature. Free vibrations of structures reinforced by FRP sheets were analyzed by the Ritz method. Displacement functions that satisfy the continuous conditions of displacement and slope at stepped cross sections were used as admissible functions for the Ritz method. We discussed differences between results by using Euler and Timoshenko beam theories based on classical lamination theory. In the optimal design, both stiffness and damping characteristics were taken into account. To improve vibration characteristics, the design variables were determined by using an optimization technique. We proposed an objective function that took into account both stiffness and damping characteristics. Effects of temperature on vibrations of the structure were considered by introducing axial force. The axial force is yielded by axial elongation or compression. The results of numerical study were verified by comparison with results of experiments. It is difficult to specify the material properties of FRP. Values of parameters were estimated by using a simple genetic algorithm (GA). Numerical results showed good agreements with those obtained by experiments.
