Research Abstract |
Triaxial, centrifuge model and consolidation tests have been carried out under temperatures up to 80°C to clarify the mechanical properties of clay. From the triaxial test, at first, when clay was heated, the pore water and clay particles expand, which gives to rise to an increase in pore water pressure. As the result, secondary consolidation was accelerated. Next, when clay was cooled down, swelling of clay as much as 3% was occurred. As the result, shear strength was increased because of remade adsorbed water. This phenomenon was called as solidification of soil structure in this study. From the centrifuge model test, shear strength of clay ground was also increased by acceleration of secondary consolidation and solidification of soil structure. From the consolidation test, effect of high temperature was doubled coefficient of permeability. From these test results, high temperature effect has two special properties. One is increasing shear strength. Another is shorting the consolidation time. Therefore, there is a possibility of using high temperature effect for improvement of soft ground.
