Research Abstract

(1)Situation with difficulty and the measure towards the improvement in walking
From the reference investigation of the previous research on crosswalk, we checked the knowledge of this research can expect contributing to the elderly people' s crossing walk environmental improvement of many snowfall boundary areas in winter.
(2)Creation and analysis of a crossing traffic accident database
At main 71 intersections in Fukui, the database of the accident resulting in injury or death which occurred in snowfall periods (from January to march) for five.years was created. As a result of analyzing the tendency of the accident, the rate for which the personal accident under crossing walk accounts at a crossing in the center of the city compared with the crossing around in the center of the city was high, and showed clearly that it increases especially in snowfall condition.
(3)A pedestrian' s consciousness and investigation of the actual condition about crossing
Investigation and analysis by video ph … More otography were performed for the DAIMYOMACHI crossing which is an accident frequent occurrence crossing. This investigation includes the mind of pedestrian and driver by snowfall condition or not.Mounded snow on walk space developed walk distance and the inferior condition of a road-shoulder part reduced walk speed, the left-turn vehicle approached with the pedestrian compared with the time of non-snowfall condition. Above this, safe and smooth pedestrian crossing is threatened. This situation is dangerous especially for elderly people. Moreover, the lowness of the pliability at the time of a crossing walk of elderly people(over 65 years old) became clear from the walk speed investigation by the pedestrian pursuit using portable GPS.Unlike having expected at the beginning, the influence of snowfall on going-out action is considered to be related very small by elderly people and non-elderly people.
(4)Problem grasp of the crossing environment in the snowfall condition
Though generally improvement measures by the installation of the Underground passage facilities is effective in the fallen snow as an alternatives, it is not always desirable for the elderly people.ln the crossing in which the proportion in which the accident arises in the snowfall condition is high, there is abounding an accident in pedestrian crossing and in the right and left turn in comparison with the intersection except for it.
(5)Proposal of a Crosswalk Environmental management policy including the measure against snowfall
It proposed about the production of organization for the necessity for the crosswalk environmental management in the crossing with much automobile traffic, selection of an important measure crossing, the measure to implement, and effective implementation adapted to the actual snowfall condition.
