Research Abstract

We examined the effect of exercise training (Exe), drug treatment, and their combination on blood pressure (BP), heart rate HR), autonomic function or aortic sclerosis in rats. 1)Exe and β-blocker had similar effects namely decreasing resting BP,HR, sympathetic component of baroreflex function and increasing vagal component of baroreflex function in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). However, additive effects of Exe and β-blocker were obtained only under stressful condition. 2)We examined the effect of Exe, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (perindopril), and their combination on BP and arteriosclerosis in SHR. Although treatment with perindopril significantly reduced the development of hypertension and aortic sclerosis, Exe was not additive to perindopril alone. 3)The effect of Exe on baroreflex HR control after withdrawal of female sex hormones was examined using ovariectomized (OVX) female rats. Although Exe decreased resting HR similarly in OVX and sham-operated rats, Exe was not able to prevent decline in baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) in response to BP elevation that was seen in OVX rats. Exe reduced BRS in response to BP reduction in sham-operated rats but did not exert such effect in OVX rats. We conclude that the effects of Exe on baroreflex HR control are limited under the condition where female sex hormones are deficit.
