Research Abstract |
We determined the apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) of 1) normal and dysfunctional salivary glands, and 2) cervical lymphadenopathy using diffusion-weighted echo planar MR imaging. The ADC was calculated using two b-factors (=500 and 1,000 sec/mm^2). Results. 1) The ADC was lower in the parotid glands than that of the submandibular glands. The ADC was increased in sialoadenitis, whereas it descreased with abscess formation. The ADCs of parotid glands in patients with Sjogren's syndrome correlated with the salivary flow rates and the severity of gland damage as assessed on T1WI. 2) The ADC was significantly greater in metastatic lymph nodes than in benign lymphadenopathy. Nodal lymphomas showed even lower levels of the apparent diffusion coefficient. We also showed that metastatic nodes from highly or moderately differentiated cancers were associated with a significantly greater apparent diffusion coefficient than those from poorly differentiated cancers. Conculusion : These findings suggest that diffusion-weighted imaging is useful in revealing diseased states of the salivary glands and discriminating metastatic nodes.
