Research Abstract

The tongue coat is regarded as a potential reservoir for some of periodontopathic anaerobes. We attempted to develop a convenient screening method to detect a periodontopatogen-carrier in the tongue coat as a risk factor of chronic adult periodontitis among periodontally healthy young adults. The 55 volunteers were assessed for relationship between colonizations in the tongue coat of some periodontopathic bacteria and clinical parameters of gender, current smoking, levels of volatile sulfur compounds (vSC) in the mouth air, amount of tongue coat and saliva flow. The best result of prediction for the colonization was obtained in Poiphyromonas gingivalis. The miximum likelihood ratio (LR) was 8.79 and minimum LR was 0.15 using VSC level and saliva flow as independent variables. Other relationships between the clinical parameters and occurrences of tested bacteria were impractical or invalid for prediction. Further, we investigated the distribution of oral diseases related bacteria in tongue coat of elderly people. The 165 (93 dentulous and 72 edentulous) volunteers aged 85 years were surveyed. As the results, periodontopathic bacteria represented by P gmgivalis was more frequently detected in the tongue coat samples from the dentulous subjects than the edentulous subjects. In the dentulous subjects, a significant correlation was observed between the colonization of P gingivalis and the maximum CPJ code of all present teeth. While the detection rate of Streptococcus mutans did not relate to any clinical parameters, and Streptococcus sobrinus was frequently detected from individuals wearing artificial denture. Furthermore, VSC level in mouth air was not associated with occurrence of P ghigzvalis but Treponema denticola.
