Research Abstract

Groundwater from Mt.Fuji is utilized as souse of tap water and commercial bottle water. As quality of drinking water could affect human health, we are investigated the groundwater around Mt.Fuji. It has already been reported by many investigators that the groundwater from Mt.Fuji contain relatively high concentration of trace element vanadium. As vanadium compounds have several good effects on diabetic patients and animals, the effects of intake of Mt.Fuji groundwater are concern of many ordinary people. In this study showed that the effect of vanadium on diabetic mice treated with oral diabetic medicine. Diabetic KK-Ay mice were caged with 1 mg/L vanadium solution as drinking water for 3 weeks. Other KK-Ay mice were given the ion-exchanged water as control animal group. The diabetic mice were orally administered with glibenclamide or buformine. The glibenclamide is one of sulfonyl urea drugs, the buformine is one of biguanide drugs. Blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), total cholesterol and triglyceride were analyzed in the diabetic mice. These parameters were no difference between vanadium solution-drink animal group and ion-exchanged water-drink animal group. These results suggest that vanadium is not enhanced activity of oral diabetic medicine on KK-Ay mice.
