Research Abstract |
In this study, by making prescriptions of exercises for persons with disabilities depending on individual impairment levels, what kind of influences of physical fitness on them the exercises for three years continuation would cause was examined. Subjects were three persons with physical disabilities, suffered from osteogenesis imperfecta, cerebral palsy, or spinal cord injury. They are three persons of 35 to 43 years old. Prescribed exercises were performed with the frequency of every 7-10 days. During the exercises, the heart rate(HR), the oxygen uptake, the total haemoglobin (Total Hb), the ratio of oxygen-saturated haemoglobin among Total Hb (simplified as oxygen saturation, or StO_2), the blood pressure, the lactic acid in the blood and self-assessment of physical conditions were recorded at the frequency of approximately every 40 days. The heart rate and oxygen uptake of all subjects showed high correlation coefficients in the third year. And similar to that, the heart rate and rating of perceived exertion(RPE) showed high correlation coefficients in the third year. Total Hb and StO_2 did not change significantly at the rest, during exercise and after exercise. The post-exercise caused the higher tendency than pre-exercise for both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Lactic acid in the blood showed increase of about 4-5mmol/l post-exercise compared with pre-exercise. Self-assessment of post-exercise revealed good feeling about all subjects. In conclusion, prescribed exercises for three years for persons with physical disabilities showed the possibilities that the life habits making custom of exercises give desirable influences in both psychologically and physiologically for persons with physical disabilities. The influences would be effective for prevention of life-style related diseases and making active healthy lives for persons with physical disabilities.
