Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is to develop techniques for the creation of material for language education utilizing pattern recognition technology and a multi-language database. Also, the material developed using these techniques will be made available on the Internet by making use of web technologies. In doing so, we aim to develop a self study language environment. In 2002, the specifications for a Japanese language education materials database were decided. As language materials were developed, the structure of the database was defined so that education professionals and information specialists could exchange information. Based on the structure of this database, the data for "Beginning-level Japanese" was entered into the database, and reusable data for language education materials (one of the themes of this research) was created. Also, with the techniques used, UTF-8 encoding was used from the start in order to create material that can be used in many languages. In 2003, the structur

e of the database was changed to XML in order to make the database more flexible. XML is the latest technology used for web data, and it not only allows great flexibility in the definition of data, but also is applicable to the creation of web pages. In order for the development of educational material with this technique to be effective, data from German language material developed by the author was changed into reusable XML data. Now, it is possible to create German language education material for the Internet by utilizing the change in the script. As mentioned above, the purpose of this research is to create techniques for the creation of multi-environment multimedia language material using a multi-language database. The goals of this research have largely been achieved. However, the other theme of the research, voice recognition technology, has met with some difficulty. Currently available voice recognition software, depending on the speaker, Depending on the speaker, the ability of currently available voice recognition software to distinguish voices is too unreliable and not sufficient for practical usage. I plan to follow the development of voice recognition software and continue researching techniques for the development of automatically generated language education materials. Less
