Research Abstract |
In this research, we studied a user-level network file system using PC-cluster based on the concept of parallel I/O system with parallel network links. The purpose of this research is to study the effectiveness of introducing wide-bandwidth parallel network channels to balance the bandwidth of today's high-speed disk system when building user-level network file system on PC-clusters. On an experimental cluster with four nodes where each node is equipped with dual-CPU SMP system and multi-port NICs, a quad-port Fast Ethernet and dual-port Gigabit Ethernet. We confirmed that such a high-end PC server with dual-CPU SMP can support our multi-threaded parallel I/O system to trunk multiple links of Ethernet. This system can achieve 90% and 70% of peak performance on quad Fast Ethernet and dual Gigabit Ethernet, respectively. We also designed a prototype of network file system for parallel scientific applications on this system.
