Research Abstract |
Although the recent development of information technology has raised the need for information processing systems, the cost of their introduction, maintenance and operation becomes extremely high. The cost is sometimes so high that small and medium companies cannot afford to introduce a system even though they desperately need it. At the same time, a part of business transactions have already been computerized and urgent computerization is a key to the survival in the business. For these reasons, it is being given the top priority to construct a software development environment and an infrastructure for software distribution that would cut the cost of the construction and maintenance of he system. This project proposed a system called GISEN (General Integrated Software Environment for Nexus). The goal of the GISEN is to realize the concept of "Service Anywhere" ; that is, everyone can take advantage of the same service irrespective of where he/she is, and the service is maximized to fit

in with each user's environment. The final goal of this project is to establish measures to offer such an information system. The features of our system can be summarized as follows. Resource-oriented applications : The implementation of a bare application (XAD) simultaneously completes the development of a full application for certain sets of resources as far as the components specialized for the resources are available. This feature makes it a lot easier to offer services for different kinds of terminals ; consequently, it enhances the range of services and, at the same time, improves the development efficiency. Easy application management : In our system, a request for an application triggers the download of the necessary components that fits the client resources. By applying this mechanism, the system can realize an easy version-up of application components. When some components in an application are upgraded, the application can easily be reconstructed by substituting the new components for the old ones. The above features have the following effects. Our system leads to cutting down the development cost of various Web applications (network applications) including business systems. Recently, the demand for IT systems is increasingly rising in various business fields. The rise of the demand for system development will surely push up the demand for development environment on the side of the developers to take on the system development. At the same time, much more component-based applications will appear on the market and the number of companies selling components will increase accordingly. Our system has realized component distribution, and it can be an infrastructure for efficient application distribution when more software components are circulated. The market of our system extends to the whole software business. Less
