Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The aim of this study is to value the mangrove ecosystem services towards coastal peoples in Bangladesh. During the first fiscal year the research fellow visited five sites, Ecologically Critical Area adjacent to Sundarbans and 4 sites in the southeastern Bangladesh. Revenue data were collected from concerned Forest Department offices. Revenue collected since last 16 years were compiled and temporal variation was investigated. What peoples feel really the ecosystem services are in the study area was studied using two different survey methods namely, Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and Personal Interview (PI). Altogether, 22 FGDs including 227 respondents and 145 PIs were carried out in the Mangrove adjacent villages. In earlier management plan period (2000-’10) timber was the highest contributory source for revenue in Sundarbans whereas fisheries found as highest contributory source in latest reign (ongoing 2010-’20). On the other hand, revenue of Chittagong coastal forest division was not found remarkable as those were considered mainly for the protection purposes. The future forest management should consider peoples’ perception concerning forest ecosystem services. Those should be designed to ensure as well as improve forest dependents capacity and active participation to ensure sustainable management of these mangrove forests. However, the outlook of the forest department needs to be shaped with a better participatory orientation so that the policy will help the forest dependent so-called “the destructors” will turn to be “the protectors”.
