Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In fiscal year 2016, the Fellow was able to accomplish all her targets. Surveys, field work, data processing and analysis where all finished on time. Specifically, she was able to finish the last leg of her tree survey, finish the last of the series of temperature measurement surveys and do two model runs during this fiscal year. With the results of the tree survey, she was able to quantify the following ecosystem services: carbon storage, annual carbon sequestration, annual avoided run-off, air pollutant removal, and annual oxygen production. On the other hand, results of the hydrological modelling confirmed the strategic role of Kinuta Park in flood risk mitigation, both under present and future climate change conditions. This serves then as valuable input to the Flood Damage Model. Finally, the results of the temperature survey confirmed the mitigating effect of Kinuta Park against Heat Island Effects. This mitigating effect is most pronounced in summer when temperature in and immediately around the park could be 2-3 degrees C lower than the surrounding areas, as compared to just about 1 degree C or less during fall and winter. Her field survey in Germany has been very helpful in clarifying certain aspects of her research as it provided data against which the data she collected here in Japan could be compared. One part of her research (i.e., the social component) was presented in this year's Annual Conference of the Royal Geographical Society in the UK. The presentation was very well received.
