Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the previous year, I have finished three drafts mainly on two streams of studies concerning foreign direct investment (FDI hereafter). In the current year, I was devoted to presenting my work at conferences, revising the papers based on the comments I received, and came up with one more paper about firms' decision in attending voluntary environmental program. To be specific, as for the paper that tries to verify how the establishment of investment promotion agencies (IPAs) affects the decisions of foreign firms in the context of China, I used more detailed firm-level data in China and improved methodology to deal with the endogeneity problem, and re-verified the hypothesis. The results are in contrast with the former ones in that IPAs in China are found not to be as effective as we have expected. The finding provides new evidence and incentive for us to re-evaluate the FDI-inviting policies in China. The paper was accepted by Japanese Economic Review. As for the investigation on firms’ behavior after FDI is made, I mainly applied firm-level data in Vietnam to conduct the analysis. The main task was to revise and improve the two existing drafts. Apart from that, I took a different perspective by examining both theoretically and empirically how the firms make the decision to adopt ISO14001, one of the major international environmental standard. The inter-relationship between firms’ productivity, capital intensity and the propensity of adoption has been made clear, which turns out to be the pioneer work of its kind.
