Outline of Annual Research Achievements

自然界において、宇宙より絶え間なく地上に降り注ぐ光は植物にとって、光合成活動を始めとして生育を左右する重要な環境因子の一つである。
外界の光環境は日単位、年単位で変化しており、植物はそれに応じて常に生長を変化させる必要がある。特に、植物が光の方向に応じて生長速度や方向を調節することを、光屈性反応として広く知られている。
植物の光屈性に関する研究はチャールズ・ダーウィンの時代より盛んに行われてきた。ただし、普段から光の下で生育する植物の「地上部」における研究に対して、暗い地下に存在する「根部」がどのように光に応答するかについてはいまだ不明な点が多い。
以前より、暗黒化で伸長する根の重力屈性（屈曲）が、光の刺激がきっかけとして起こることが報告されてきた。言い換えると、暗黒条件下の根は重力方向を感知することができない。この光依存的な重力屈性は、根が光からより早く遠ざかるための忌避応答の一部と考えられる。しかし、根の光受容後、どのような細胞内イベントが起こっているかは明らかにされていなかった。
本研究課題において、トウモロコシ幼根を用いて光照射実験を行ったところ、根の先端部において植物ホルモンの一つであるオーキシン分子が蓄積していること、また、オーキシン分子が根端部において新規にアミノ酸のトリプトファンより生合成されていることが分かった。オーキシンは根の屈性において、細胞分裂や伸長を制御する上で重要な役割を果たす植物ホルモンである。これらの結果から、光に応答して根が忌避する一連の反応には、根端部におけるオーキシンの生合成と蓄積が関わっていることが明らかになった。さらに、根への光照射により、その他様々なシグナリング分子や生理活性物質の濃度や局在が変化していることも明らかになった。
