Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本年度の主要成果として、効率とパワーの間の普遍的トレードオフ関係の構築が挙げられる。1年目の研究成果である部分エントロピー生成の手法を応用することで、効率とパワーの間のトレードオフ不等式を導いた。この不等式は、熱機関のダイナミクスがマルコフ過程で与えられるという条件さえ満たしていれば、たとえ激しい非平衡状態に途中がなっていたとしても、また磁場などによって時間反転対称性が破れていたとしても、成り立つような極めて一般的な関係式である。この不等式は、効率を上げようとするとその分原理的な最大のパワーが下がらざるを得ないことを示しており、特に効率がカルノー効率に達する際にはパワーがゼロにならなければいけないという禁止定理をコロラリーに含んでいる。本研究結果は、効率とパワーという、熱力学における基本的な量でありながら、長らくその関係が分かってこなかった二つの量に対し、初めて一般的な関係を明らかにするものである。
これにより、2年目の結果においては「仮定」とされていた「有限パワーかつカルノー効率の熱機関は存在しない」という事実を証明することに成功したため、「自律的な熱機関のカルノー効率達成条件」は定理の形にすることが出来た。さらに申請者は、2年目の証明における時間反転対称性の仮定をなくすことにも成功し、得られた条件は磁場や運動量などがあっても一般に成り立つ結果であることが分かった。さらに、この達成条件の物理的意味を考察した結果、熱機関が有限の大きさか、それとも(熱力学極限とみなせる)マクロな大きさかによって、極めて異なる帰結がもたらされることが分かった。これらの差異の生じるメカニズム、どのような熱機関がそれぞれの条件を満たすか、等も明らかにすることが出来たため、「自律的な熱機関」の熱力学における基礎的な量である最大効率についての性質は、本研究で明らかにできたと考えている。
