Research Abstract

本研究の目的は、有機分子を含む電気伝導体の中から、今までにない機能を持った半導体を発掘してその機能を探索することである。研究を開始した時点で既に、有機伝導体α-ET_2I_3(およびいくつかの類縁物質)を高圧力下に置くと、非常に狭いバンドギャップの半導体になり、特異な伝導特性を示すことが明らかになっていた。そこで、本研究では、常圧力下でナロウギャップ半導体になる物質の探索を目指した。結果として、そのような物質の発見はできなかった。最近明らかになったことであるが、このような物質の出現条件はなかなか厳しいのである。2005年になって、これら物質の特異な伝導性を理解する上で重要なヒントとなる発見が理論班鈴村グループによってもたらされた。この物質は、ナローギャップ半導体ではなく、ギャップがゼロの伝導体であること、伝導帯と価電子帯がブリルアンゾーンの2点で接していて、接点の近傍の電子は直線的なエネルギー分散ε=hv_Fk(ε:エネルギー、h:プランク定数、v_F:フェルミ速度、k:電子の波数)を持つことがバンド計算の結果見つかったのである。そこで、我々のグループでは、α-ET_2I_3がゼロギャップ伝導体であるとして、その特異な伝導特性がどこまで理解できるかを検討した。その結果、ゼロ磁場伝導度、担体濃度の温度依存性、担体移動度の温度依存性などが、無理なく理解できることが明らかになった。副産物として、担体濃度の温度変化からフェルミ速度が求められた。ただし、α-ET_2I_3の場合、v_Fには異方性があるので、その平均値である。
