Research Abstract |
The research has been carried out to demonstrate the novel optical waveguide switches having ferro-electric liquid crystal claddings. Achievements of the research include ; 1. Proposal of a new phase-variable waveguide constituted with the optical waveguide with liquid crystal claddings. 2. Evaluation of core materials suited for phase-variable optical waveguide. 3. Development of Si optical waveguide using Silicon-On-Insulator substrate. 4. Demonstration of phase-variable optical waveguide with the ferro-electric liquid crystal cladding. 5. Development of an optical Mach-Zehnder Interferometer amplitude modulator and 2x2 optical switch using phase-variable optical waveguide with the ferro-electric liquid crystal cladding. 6. Demonstration of the feasibility of phase-variable optical waveguides with ferro-electric liquid crystal cladding through the development of optical switches.
