Research Abstract

Recently, many countries in the world are faced with water supply shortage and the situation is getting worse. In order to overcome this situation, a water bag was developed for sea-borne transportation and storage of water. However, it is difficult to detect its damage with conventional sensors, since a water bag is floating in the sea, flexible and more than 100 m long. Then, in this research, we propose a new damage detection technique for a large water bag by the cable theory. The equivalent circuit and a model of the water bag and its environment are considered first. When current is injected into a water bag from an electrode, obvious change of membrane potential is observed between damaged and undamaged water bags both experimentally and theologically. This will provide an easy and economical damage monitoring method for a practical usage.
