Research Abstract

When using the rock, to know the pressure which rock had received in underground is important. It is thought that the rock is maintaining the stress received in underground as residual strain. It is possible to presume the pressure under the earth in order to measure the residual stress for the rocks. In this study, we have made an experimental study to measure the residual strain of granite and marble rocks by neutron diffraction using Sirius diffractometer at KENS, KEK. The d-spacing from powder sample was used to calculate the residual strain instead of the unstressed d-spacing. We also made the uniaxial compression experiments using the compression-testing device for Sirius diffractometer to get the relationship between strain by neutron diffraction and applied stress. In this study, we used granite and marble rocks as samples.
The result from granite, the shift for peak position showed maximum at (110) direction. The strain for (110) direction was 1.7^*10^<-4>%/1N and the calculate maximum residual stress was 5.5MPa from the strain. The result from single phase rock, marble, the calculate maximum residual stress for (110) direction was 3.57MPa. In this measurements, the value of shifting peak position was changing according rotation of sample. But, the systematic changing was not observed. There is a necessity for being continue study and experiment in the future.
