Research Abstract |
In close collaboration with United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization, International Center for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, the study was conducted on methods of promoting sustainable development. The first part of the study focused on the literature review on the development of "Integrated Conservation Approach". Various interviews were conducted at International organization concerned, as well as regional organizations and higher educational institutions, particularly in Asia. Further, problems that World Heritage sites are facing in Asia were analyzed. Two cases were closely looked at through field studies : Shirakawa-mura in Japan and Luang Prabang in Lao PDR. Both cases are inscribed as World Heritage Sites as residential districts. The studies identified specific activities reflecting "Integrated Conservation Approach" to preservation and development of the sites. In cooperation with La Maison du Patrimoine in Luang Prabang as a part of Integrated Conservation Approach, needs assessment was conducted to identify how and what kind of specific information technology could contribute effectively to the development of Luang Prabang. Development of database management system and Knowledge Kiosk were found to be most needs areas which information technology can provide positive influence. At the International Forum organized by UNHABITAT, Tokyo Tech co-organized a session "Water and Urban Development" with UNESCO, inviting 9 international experts from 5 countries. Research results have been presented at international conferences and national seminars, as well as presenting at the Ministry of Culture and Information in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
